SUMMARY

This role serves as the financial lead for the JMS eCommerce organization, providing objective financial leadership and guidance. This includes influencing the organization to make informed and profitable decisions. Specific responsibilities for the eCommerce financial lead are further detailed below. In addition, this role serves as the financial lead for the eCommerce and Pet Specialty Sales teams and the related Customer Commercialization (CC) teams --- providing financial visibility and decision support to help these teams achieve Smucker and Retailer sales and profit objectives. eCommerce and Pet Specialty have unique financial and contractual obligations to the customers and therefore requires the individual in this role to have specialized knowledge of the financial terms and implications of such contracts. The role will partner closely with the Customer Finance roles that support the Customer & Category Business (CCB) teams. This will ensure accurate and timely Plan and Forecasts as well as evaluation of incremental opportunities and business scenario analysis.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial Lead for eCommerce Organization:

  • Build customized P&Ls (customer/fulfillment model/brand/SKU level)
  • Evaluate performance, and proactively raise trends and ideas. Integrate disparate data sources (Shipment, ePOS retailer sales, IRI, 3rd Party eComm share data) to form performance management dashboards for leadership, participate in business reviews, and lead budget/forecast development. 
  • Participate in associated SBA funding “guardrail” discussions, assess performance/ROI of Trade promotions and “trade-like” activities (e.g. Amazon Media), recommend marketing improvement opportunities based on performance of trials, analyze supply chain optimization opportunities, and support ad-hoc strategic initiatives (e.g. analyze viability of eCommerce-specific packaging). 
  • Advise on KPIs/approaches needed to measure different types of eCommerce investments (e.g. how to evaluate success of new product investments vs. ongoing performance).
  • Business Performance Reviews with Customer Teams:

  • Lead monthly customer-level business reviews. Ensure team’s understanding of customer P&L and SIP implications related to business situations and decisions. 
  • Drive organizational visibility through financial reporting, customer P&Ls, tracking and insights. Provide balanced perspective to ensure teams have an ongoing understanding of brand strategies, priorities and perspective. 
  • Partner with Sales to identify opportunities to optimize their customer(s) contribution toward meeting the Company’s sales and profit objectives (including incremental opportunities analysis, ongoing mix/ROI analysis, cost to serve analysis, etc.). 
  • Financial Reporting, Forecasting, and Compliance:

  • Responsible for leading customer-level financial aspects of reporting and forecasting volume and trade (as well as other sales deducts). 
  • Identify and articulate key drivers of results and provide visibility and guidance on trends to support accurate forecasting. Provide a forward-looking lens and historical perspective to enhance accuracy and financial predictability. 
  • Lead continuous efforts to streamline processes, eliminate redundancy and improve accuracy of full-year volume and trade forecasts. 
  • Lead customer-specific identification of risks and opportunities and drive visibility with the CCB and SBA finance teams. Ensure ongoing compliance with trade and other sales deducts policies, inclusive of accurate, efficient, and compliant use of the Company’s trade systems (i.e. CAS). Includes working with the trade audit team to ensure promotions are set up accurately & according to contract, timely promotion approvals, timely and accurate scrubbing, burn rate analysis, period-end accrual adequacy, prior year accrual compliance, etc. Also responsible for supporting customer-level Cost Center forecasting and planning.
  • Customer support and analysis:

  • Provide objective financial support for Joint Business Planning (JBP) activities. Bring the “outside in” to represent the customer perspective & visibility through discussion and management reporting. 
  • Develop and review financials through the retailer’s lens to ensure recognition of external impact, compare our performance at a given retailer to their category performance, and support retailer margin analysis (considering the retailer’s margin requirements). 
  • Ensure linkage of JBP activities and the Company’s Long-Range Planning (LRP) activities. In addition to JBP, lead financial reviews of customer contract analysis and compliance (e.g. PVA, LDI, customer “asks”). 
  • Ensure contractual obligations are reflected in plan and forecast and that the Sales organization is executing brand strategies within guidelines and adhering to Company financial policies. 
  • Annual planning and reviews:

  • Establish annual sales and trade objectives in collaboration with Finance and CCB leadership.
  • Partner with Sales to build plans to meet objectives and execute within guidelines. This work is inclusive of ROI and mix analysis at the promotional level while also providing perspectives from the lens of overall customer profitability. 
  • Provide customer insights and financial updates (including customer-specific expectations regarding innovation and other risks and opportunities) to the CCB and SBA finance team(s) to align customer and brand objectives.
  • SELECTION CRITERIA

    Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance is required
  • MBA, CPA preferred
  • Experience

  • Minimum of 6+ years financial analysis experience in two or more disciplines
  • Financial planning and forecasting ownership
  • Proven ability to effectively lead team members and cross-functional groups
